Over the decades, two generations of Central New York indoor track and field athletes found glory at Manley Field House.
Now, before Manley becomes an exclusive Syracuse University practice facility, the local athletes had one more turn Friday night during the Section III State Qualifier, the prelude to this Saturday’s state meet at Cornell University.
And once again, Cicero-North Syracuse had a large presence. Jasmine Thompson won twice on the girls side, taking the 55-meter hurdles in 8.70 seconds as Oswego’s Eliza Parker (8.91 seconds) took the runner-up spot.
Not stopping there, Thompson moved on to the high jump, where she was the lone athlete to clear 5 feet 3 inches and four others (including teammate Gina Campagna) by two inches. On top of that, Alana Hotchkiss won in the triple jump, going 35 feet 1 1/4 inches.
In the 4×800 relay, Nicole Campagna, Taylor Wendler, Marissa Colburn and Lindsay Raulli finished second in 9:39.48 as Fayetteville-Manlius won in 9:30.88.
On her own, Raulli took second in the 1,500-meter run in 4:56.14, well back of F-M’s Courtney Chapman (4:37.07).
Dana Rinaldi (11:01.58) and Nicole Watterud (11:13.93) were fourth and fifth, respectively, at 3,000 meters, while Chelsea Davidson got fourth at 600 meters in 1:44.06.
In the boys meet, CNS emerged with a victory in the 4×400 relay as Jake Whritenour, Mike Fiume, Brandon Marlow and Alex Neumeister put up a time of 3:29.65 as West Genesee (3:31.18) was second.
Chris Buchanan reached the state meet by finishing second in a time of 9:40.77, more than three seconds clear of the state qualifying standard.
Keenan Williams landed in second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.13 seconds, while Eric Sykora took second in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet 6 inches. Jared Walther was fourth in the mile in 4:33.54 as Nick Dunbar, Alex Bottorff, Jeff Quick and Wes Kufel got fifth place in the 4×800 relay in 8:32.59.
