Both the Marcellus and Skaneateles wrestling teams sent its top stars to last Saturday’s Section III Division II (small school) championship meet at Utica Memorial Auditorium.
On the Mustangs’ side, Pat Cost had the best finish, a fourth at 125 pounds. He overcame a quarterfinal defeat to General Brown’s Justin Green, a tough 9-8 decision, by nearly sweeping the consolation bracket.
Cost first beat Matt Shirley (Sandy Creek) 10-5, then took out Greg Duvall (Sherburne-Earlville) 6-2 to reach the consolation bracket final. Cazenovia’s Alex Petroff, would stop the run, though, beating Cost 7-1 to leave him in fourth.
Ross Bolewski, wrestling at 215 pounds, beat Justin Quimby (Port Byron) 10-2 in the first round, but took a third-period pin to Copenhagen’s Dylan Eddy in the quarterfinals.
For Skaneateles, Kyle Sears had the best finish, a sixth at 152 pounds. He started by earning a 5-1 decision over Seth Mullanax (Sherburne-Earlville) before a quarterfinal defeat to Mohawk’s Zach Hunt. Sears then beat Kyle Earl (Ilion) 5-3 in the consolation bracket before a pair of defeats, including a 4-3 decision to South Jefferson’s Jared Roberts in the fifth-place match.
Jacob Valentino made it through the opening round at 130 pounds when he beat Adam Hall (Beaver River) 12-7. Then Valentino ran into top seed Eric Munk (General Brown) and lost in a first-period pin.
Nathan Hunt, working at 145 pounds, pinned Jeremy Skvarch (Fabius-Pompey) in 3:23, then had an 11-5 defeat to Nate Silverthorn (General Brown). In a close consolation match, Hunt fell to Kody Newman (Mount Markham) 7-6.
