For the second time in as many weeks, the Skaneateles girls indoor track and field team claimed the runner-up spot in a post-season meet at Manley Field House.
During last Tuesday’s OHSL Liberty/Patriot division championship meet, the Lakers earned 89 points, again having to take second place behind Christian Brothers Academy, who beat the field in 138 points.
Skaneateles nearly swept the relay. First, the Lakers were victorious in the 4×400 relay, where Beatrice Walton, Cassie Berg, Kelsey Eshleman and Eileen Ford posted a time of 4:18.74 to hold off CBA (4:19.73) by slightly less than a full second.
Later on, in the 4×200, Berg and Ford joined Carley Baulick and Victoria Sakal as they won in 1:52.73, more than three seconds clear of the field. In the 4×800, Eshleman, Walton, Christie Barnett and Carley Strods were second in 10:20.45 behind CBA.
Barnett earned a win in the 1,000-meter run as she got a time of 3:06.89, nearly two seconds clear of CBA”s Carol Giblin. Walton, on her own, got fourth place in the 600 in 1:48.22. Chelsea Scholz was fifth in the 55-meter hurdles in 10.87 seconds.
In an exciting 55-meter dash, Victoria Sakal, in 7.61 seconds, just got beat at the wire by CBA’s Melissa Zajdel, and was also second (43.56 seconds) in the 300-meter dash.
Madison Eckles cleared 9 feet for another title in the pole vault. Cheryl Dean won the shot put, tossing it 27 feet, while Ford took second in the triple jump by going 30 feet 2 1/2 inches.
A day later, Skaneateles had its boys team finish seventh in a field of 13 during its version of the OHSL Liberty/Patriot meet with 28 points.
Patrick Rooney ruled in the triple jump, going 39 feet 5 1/2 inches to beat the field by nearly a foot and a half.
Sean Cooper also won, in the 55-meter hurdles, his time of 8.81 seconds enough to hold off Solvay’s Conor Halton (8.97 seconds) for the top spot. Calvin Davis earned the other points, as he was second in the 600-meter run in 1:28.59 behind Marcellus’ Mike Quercia (1:24.75).
