Liverpool’s wrestling team did not have to travel far to compete in Saturday’s Section III Class AA championship meet.
With the meet at Cicero-North Syracuse, the Warriors picked up 98 points, finishing seventh in a field of 12. Baldwinsville won with 205.5 points.
Tyler Eason earned a spot in the 112-pound final. He pinned Matt Berkery (Solvay) in 3:30 and topped Antonio DeLuco (Rome Free Academy) 6-4 to get to that title match, only to run into B’ville’s Anthony Finocchiaro, who won with a first-period pin.
Three different times, the Warriors won consolation brackets. Derek Eason did so at 152 pounds, pinning Mike Mannion (Fayetteville-Manlius) 42 seconds into the third period, while Joe Pizzuto (171 pounds) took third by pinning B’ville’s Niko Manning in 3:34. Jon Miller, at 189 pounds, topped B’ville’s Corey Buyck in a 3-0 decision for third place.
Matt Hathaway worked his way to fifth place at 145 pounds by getting a pin over Zach Anderson (Solvay) in 2:24. Justin Thompson (119 pounds) and Tyler Kolbasook (125 pounds) each had sixth-place efforts.
Liverpool will send several wrestlers to Utica Auditorium on Sunday for the sectional Division I (large school) championships, which starts at 10 a.m. Finals are at 7 p.m.
