Bears take sixth at Class A wrestling meet

Some of the area’s best wrestling teams found themselves at Chittenango on Saturday for the annual Section III Class A championship meet.

And the host Bears didn’t fare too badly, either, earning 109.5 points for sixth place in a field of 11. Long-time power Fulton won with 239.5 points as Cortland (172.5 points) beat Carthage (161 points) for third place.

Chittenango had just one wrestler reach the championship round — Cole Farsaci, at 112 pounds. And Farsaci didn’t disappoint the hometown fans, going out and beating Camden’s Cody Sullivan 13-6 in the championship round.

Several other Chittenango wrestlers had top-six finishes, too. Wes Blanding, at 130 pounds, beat Brandon Ingram (Indian River) 11-2 to finish in third place, and Anthony Galli matched that effort at 140 pounds when he edged past IR’s Peyton Amato 6-3 in the consolation final.

At 171 pounds, Ryan Schiedo worked his way to third place, toppling Conor Fitzpatrick (East Syracuse-Minoa) 5-2 for that honor.

Cody Carbery was fourth at 96 pounds, with John Regan getting fourth place at 119 pounds and Karl Chappell fourth at 145 pounds. Josh Wright (215 pounds) had to beat IR’s Robert Ashwood 5-2 in overtime for fifth place.

They all advanced to this Sunday’s Section III Division I (large school) championship meet at Utica Memorial Auditorium. Winners and other top wrestlers advance to the Feb. 27-28 state meet at Albany’s Times Union Center.
