Solvay hockey beats Corcoran, 6-4

It was perhaps well-timed that the Solvay ice hockey team took on Corcoran exactly when it did last Wednesday night at Meachem Rink.

Still needing one more win to lock up second place in Division II West and a first-round home game, the Bearcats delivered in a big way, beating the Cougars 6-4.

Corcoran had already clinched the league regular-season title, so its playoff position would not be affected by what took place here. By contrast, Solvay was trying to fend off Skaneateles for second place after it had lost to the Lakers at Allyn Arena on Feb. 2.

The Bearcats and Corcoran were in a 1-1 tie after one period, but Solvay inched in front 3-2 during the second period, then landed three more goals in the final period to fend off the Cougars’ comeback tries.

Steven Adams picked a great time for his first career hat trick, putting home three goals, often set up by passes from Tim Burgess, who had three assists to go with his single tally.

Josh Ginestro had a strong night, too, putting up two goals and two assists. Mike Sniffen, Len Graf, Ryan Chapman, Tom Missert and Nick Downs all had assists, too.

Corcoran still took a majority of the game’s shots. But Derrick Eccles (two goals) and James Cathers (one goal, two assists) got overshadowed as Solvay goaltender Ryan Bonk picked up 37 saves in his team’s winning effort.
