All of the local boys indoor track and field teams took their turns during Tuesday night’s Section III championship meet at Manley Field House.
In the sectional Class AA meet, West Genesee finished with 40 points, earning sixth place in a 13-team field where Cicero-North Syracuse got the top spot with 88 points.
Steve Houghmaster claimed second place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:37.88, while Billy Gabriel finished third in the mile in 4:40.22.
Houghmaster and Gabriel teamed with Sam Reedy and Tom Hopkins for second place in the 4×800 relay in 8:36.36, just before Hopkins needed 9:53.39 for fifth place in the 3,200-meter run.
Jon Richardson, Jake Lafaver, Ron Ta and Zach Lafaver earned second in the 4×400 relay in 3:32.33, nudged out at the wire by CNS (3:31.87), as Richardson got sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.48 seconds.
In the 4×200, Ta, the Lafaver brothers and Zac Karpinski combined for third place in 1:37.39. Karpinski won his heat in the 300-meter dash (38.32 seconds) and was sixth overall.
Solvay nearly got to the top of the Class B ranks, tying Clinton for second place with 71 points, just behind Marcellus, who won with 80 points.
Further down the list, Bishop Ludden/Grimes landed in fifth place, with 34 points, while Jordan-Elbridge and Westhill tied for seventh with 26 points apiece.
Tyler Grim, Rich Salvagno, Conor Halton and Jeremy Parker combined to give the Bearcats a victory in the 4×200 relay in 1:36.99. In the 4×400, Halton, Grim, Taylor Delperuto and Xander Nappi produced another title in 3:37.15.
Halton, on his own, finished second in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.19 seconds as Salvagno finished fifth. Delperuto took second in the 55-meter dash (7.07 seconds) and Parker landed in second in the 600-meter run in 1:29.32.
Chris Hoffman was fourth in the 300-meter dash in 39.75 seconds and sixth in the long jump, as Matt Fedrizzi needed 4:44.39 for fifth place in the mile. Fedrizzi, Seth Moore, Peter Cifratta and Ed Buczikowski were fifth in the 4×800 relay in 9:18.85.
Also for Solvay, C.J. Brooks won the shot put, tossing it 46 feet 5 3/4 inches to beat the field by nearly four feet. Over in the pole vault, Jerry Santoferrara cleared 11 feet 6 inches to tie for second place.
Ludden featured Sean Curry blitzing the field in the 3,200-meter run, where he won in a time of 9:37.66, more than 21 seconds clear of the field. Curry also finished third in the mile in 4:39.91 as Nick Barletta (4:44.12) claimed fourth place.
Curry’s teammate, Zach Johnson, got second in the 300-meter dash in 38.83 seconds and third in the 600-meter run in 1:29.41.
J-E saw John Flynn clear 5 feet 8 inches in the high jump, tying Canastota’s Robbie Argentine. But Argentine had fewer misses, so Flynn settled for second place. He also went 19 feet 7 inches to take second place in the high jump and added a sixth in the 55 hurdles.
In the 4×200 relay, Nick Byrnes, Carlin Coomey, Andrew Conlan and Kyle Becker won their heat and took fourth overall in 1:42.97. Cody Stanton, Greg Bader, Mike Marrero and Steve Slonosky were sixth in the 4×800 in 9:22 flat. Marrero got fourth in the 1,000-meter run in 2:47.36.
Westhill was strong in the 3,200-meter run, where Chris Moore finished third (10:01.85) and Vinny Savastano took fourth place in 10:05.67. That pair teamed with Kevin Zych and Mitchell Lamb for third in the 4×800 relay (8:56.39) as Pete Clark, Matt Trendowski, Jake Files and Sal Valenti got third in the 4×200 relay in 1:41.93.
