Taking its turn during last Saturday’s OHSL Liberty/Patriot Division championship meet at Solvay, the Marcellus wrestling team had a modest showing.
Overall, the Mustangs finished 12th in a 15-team field, with 70 points. Hannibal finished on top with 214 points.
Marcellus twice had wrestlers in championship matches. Pat Cost, at 125 pounds, earned a pair of pins to reach the finals, but then ran into Cazenovia’s Alex Petroff and lost an 8-2 decision. Petroff, a four-time league champion, was the meet’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.
Meanwhile, Ross Bolewski earned a pin and a 17-7 decision over Homer’s Ryan Murray to reach the 215-pound title match, only to run into Solvay’s Tom Bradley and take a third-period pin to finish second.
Matt Marcheterre, wrestling at 119 pounds, finished fifth by pinning Marcel LaChance (Fabius-Pompey) in 2:50. This came as Keith McIntosh (96 pounds) and Matt Dempsey (130 pounds) each got sixth-place finishes.
The Mustangs go north, to South Jefferson, to compete Saturday in the Section III Class B championship meet.
