In the last matches before embarking on the Section III Class B playoffs, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team wanted to make sure its record was as strong as possible.
To that end, the Lakers hosted Solvay Tuesday night and had a fair share of early struggle before rallying to beat the Bearcats in four.
Solvay claimed a victory in the opening game 25-20, but that just seemed to wake the Lakers up. Over the next three games, Cazenovia seized control, winning by comfortable margins of 25-16, 25-14 and 25-19.
Alissa Easterly had an active night, with 23 assists to go with six kills and two aces, as Megan Robinson added 10 assists.
Lindsey Nourse produced a team-best seven kills, with Julie Gregg and Hannah Koennecke matching Easterly’s total of six kills. Lizzy Reed had five kills and Leah McAleer earned four kills.
In a non-league match Wednesday against CBA played amid unique circumstances at Buckley Gym, the Lakers swept the Brothers.
They squeezed this match into the same night as a basketball game (the boys Lakers’ loss to Westhill), and by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-20, Cazenovia kept things from running too long in an impressive effort against the 13-3 Brothers.
Gregg hurt CBA with 16 kills and 20 digs, with McAleer offering support as she picked up 10 kills and 25 digs. Nourse (five kills, eight digs) and Rachel Burbidge (four aces, 18 digs) had solid showings, too, as Easterly got 20 assists and 10 digs and Robinson finished with 10 assists.
