Running into one of Central New York’s traditional powers, the Solvay wrestling team met Mexico last Tuesday night and gained some ground before taking a 45-20 loss to the Tigers.
Mexico earned wins in the first two matches before Tom Bradley put the Bearcats on the board at 215 pounds, claiming a forfeit. J.T. Romagnoli followed at 103 pounds with a hard-fought 6-2 decision over C.J. Loomis.
Pulling clear, the Tigers won the next three matches, including a tough 112-pound contest where Matt Berkery stayed close all the way before taking a 6-4 defeat to Josh Hall.
Solvay’s best stretch began at 130 pounds, where Aaron Benedict shut out Aaron Small 9-0. Mitch Anthony (135 pounds) was just as good, beating Dominic Sesso 10-2, while Zach Anderson earned the Bearcats’ final points at 145 pounds when he edged past Joe Omlianowicz by an 8-6 margin.
It was the first of back-to-back meets for the Bearcats, who will face Marcellus Thursday night after snow closed school on Wednesday and prevented some practice in between the meets.
