Safely entrenched within the state Class C top 10, the Bishop Grimes girls basketball team aimed to stay there by racing past more OHSL Patriot division foes.
When the Cobras went to LaFayette last Tuesday night, it played at a fast tempo and really hit its stride during the middle stages of a 79-40 victory over the Lancers.
Already enjoying a 17-10 lead through one period, Grimes really took charge in the second period, converting turnovers into baskets and outscoring LaFayette 21-3 to erase any possible doubt about the income.
As if that wasn’t enough, Grimes put up 29 points in the third quarter, the most in any period this season, and would end up with five players in double figures, a near-perfect offensive balance.
Ali Kelley, Cady Kalemba (who hit three 3-pointers) and Tenley Pitonzo each finished with 11 points. All of Kelley’s points came in the first half as she set a new career mark, while Kalemba got five assists.
Cassidy Weeks and Brooke Bonacci also broke into double figures, with 10 points apiece, while Amelia Heiselman got nine points and seven assists, while Andrea Blake earned six points. As a team, Grimes shot 17 of 21 from the free-throw line.
In a scheduling note, Grimes’ second meeting with Tully, originally set for the night of Feb. 10, has moved to Saturday, Feb. 14, and will start at 2 p.m.
