In Friday’s game at Camden, the Oneida girls basketball team had a solid finish, but a long first-half drought proved costly in a 51-36 loss to the Blue Devils.
Camden started to get away when it outscored Oneida 13-4 in the second quarter, creating a 26-13 halftime deficit that the Indians spent the rest of the night trying to erase.
Ashley Hillenbrand did finish with 10 points, while Courtney Casler got eight points and Beth Kann battled her way to seven points.
On Camden’s side, Ashley Roser and Lindsay Jones both finished with 13 points, while Kailee O’Hara contributed 12 points.
As this was going on, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill resumed action at home against Holland Patent and took a 64-42 loss to the Golden Knights.
For a half, the Red Devils tried to keep up, only to get left behind when HP staged a 16-5 third-quarter blitz that provided half the ultimate margin.
Megan Reed led VVS with 10 points, just ahead of Erin Curtis and Courtney Smith, who had nine points apiece. Tracy Schiebel added eight points. For HP, Lauren Marleau worked her way to 22 points, as teammates Allyson Freiermuth (15 points) and Karlene Freiermuth (13 points) flourished, too.
VVS played again on Saturday, falling to Owego (Section IV) in a 46-36 decision. The Red Devils face New Hartford Friday, just as Oneida takes on Utica-Notre Dame.
