J-D, F-M swimmers both beaten

On Thursday night, the Jamesville-DeWItt/CBA boys swim team officially ceded its OHSL crown at Mexico as the Red Rams fell to the undefeated Tigers 99-87. It marked the second time in as many months that Mexico won this clash of pool powers.

For a long time, J-D/CBA kept it close. Eric Jorgensen, in the 200 freestyle, beat Mexico’s Mike Hartwell, 1:49.17 to 1:50.03, while Scott Thieke prevailed in the 50 freestyle (23.06 seconds). Russ Farchione, in the 100 breaststroke, won in 1:07.46, edging Rich DeLong by 0.12 seconds.

Beaten in the first relay, the Rams kept itself alive in the meet by getting high finishes in several events and having Thieke, Tyghe Speidel, Jorgensen and Matt Kopp take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:33.70.

Mexico didn’t clinch the meet until winning the last event, the 400 freestyle relay, in a school-record time of 3:20.56.

The Tigers’ top swimmer, Shawn Parkhurst swam in that race, plus the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:42.91), and also won the 200 IM (2:03.60) and 500 freestyle (4:57.30) on his own. Josh Lucas had 251.75 points in diving.

As this was going on, Fayetteville-Manlius took its shot at unbeaten CNY Counties League leader West Genesee (who beat J-D/CBA earlier in the week) and lost a 98-76 decision to the Wildcats.

Jack Robinson still managed to win twice for the Hornets, taking 2:13.41 to prevail in the 200 IM and also getting first place in the 100 backstroke in 57.79 seconds.

Will Twichell, Jason Rhee, Zach Swanson and Ryan Mobley teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:49.43. WG’s Carson Elias posted the fastest Section III time this season in the 50 freestyle, winning in 22.08 seconds.
