All it took was the subtle shift in format for the Cicero-North Syracuse indoor track and field teams to take charge on both the boys and girls fronts.
Both sides prevailed during Wednesday night’s Bob Grieve Invitational at Manley Field House, the first of the season where individuals, and not two-person teams, earned points in individual events.
In the girls meet, CNS had 61.5 points, well clear of Corcoran, who was second with 33 points. Liverpool, who won the first two meets at Manley in January, was third with 30 points.
Jasmine Thompson emerged with a victory in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.07 seconds as Gina Campagna (9.96 seconds) took fifth. Thompson was also third in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, as Campagna got fifth in the high jump.
For her part, Nicole Campagna emerged with a victory in the 600-meter run in 1:43.59, just ahead of eighth-grader Marissa Colburn, who was fourth in 1:46.76. Campagna, Jamie Ryan, Chelsea Davidson and Alana Hotchkiss were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:17.94.
Lindsay Raulli (3:11.57) and Taylor Wendler (3:11.75) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 1,000-meter run, while Casey Wilmer took third place in the shot put (30 feet 10 inches), just ahead of Valerie Langevin (30 feet 4 1/2 inches) in fourth place.
Over in the boys Grieve meet, 27 different teams earned points. Yet CNS, with 49 points, got to the top as Corcoran (30 points) again claimed runner-up honors.
In the 4×400 relay, Jake Whritenour, Shaun Hyde, Mike Fiume and Alex Neumeister recorded a time of 3:32.62, just ahead of West Genesee (3:34.85) at the wire.
Chris Buchanan ran to third place in the 3,200-meter event in 9:52.88. Vince St. James (6.82 seconds) and Artie Cooper (6.87 seconds) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 55-meter dash as Jeff Quick got fourth place in the 600-meter run in 1:29.30.
In field events, Kevin McCarthy earned second place in the high jump by clearing 6 feet. Dillon McKee was second in the pole vault, clearing 11 feet, as teammate Eric Sykora (10 feet) was fifth. Jordan Thompson threw the shot put 43 feet 1/2 inch for third place.
