Caz boys hoops falls to Marcellus

Even with the marked improvement of recent weeks, the Cazenovia boys basketball team still got reminded of its relative youth, at least when compared with the heavyweights within the OHSL Liberty division.

One case was last Wednesday’s game with Marcellus at Buckley Gym, a contest where the Lakers got shut down for long portions of a 61-40 loss to the Mustangs.

Marcellus, no. 7 in the latest state Class B rankings, had started 13-0 before a loss to two-time defending Class B champion Hannibal on Jan. 17 at LeMoyne College. It had also lost leading scorer Will Fiacchi for the season with a stress fracture in his foot.

But even though Cazenovia played some strong early defense, Marcellus started to get away in the second quarter. A 22-6 third-quarter outburst sealed matters as, by comparison, Cazenovia had just 22 in the first three periods combined.

Cullinan Williams contributed to a late Laker burst with 10 points, while Chris Schaffner added nine points. No one else had more than two field goals, though, as Steve Raven and Dan Heil each had 12 points to lead a balanced Marcellus offense. Cazenovia meets Skaneateles on Friday night.
