Moving closer to the top, the West Genesee boys indoor track and field team tied for seventh in a field of more than 20 opponents during last Thursday night’s Fred Kirschenheiter Memorial Relays at Manley Field House.
WG, in all, had 20 points, sharing seventh with Corcoran. Neither were that far from the top, as Cicero-North Syracuse and Baldwinsville (41 points) shared those honors.
All of those points came from a pair of victories. The Wildcats prevailed in the 4×1,600 relay as Billy Gabriel, Sam Reedy, Tom Hopkins and Steve Houghmaster covered the four miles in 18 minutes, 37.01 seconds, beating Fayetteville-Manlius (18:42.91) by nearly six seconds.
Also, in the 1,600 sprint medley, WG took first place as Houghmaster joined Jake Lafaver, Zac Karpinski and Ron Ta for a time of 3:44.90, just holding off Jamesville-DeWitt (3:45.92) for that top spot.
Over in the girls Kirschenheiter Relays, West Genesee had 10 points, tying Oswego for 10th place. Alex Incaudo, Katie Bott, Colleen Smith and Kristin Waters combined to finish second in the 4×1,600 relay in 23:33.76 as Liverpool (23:19.27) finished first. WG was also sixth in the sprint medley and 4×800 relays.
