As they do twice each winter, the Marcellus and Skaneateles girls basketball teams got together, but only one ended up happy.
The Mustangs, continuing its mid-season resurgence, used a ferocious defense as the foundation for a 46-18 romp over the Lakers.
Marcellus had every reason to feel tired, for it was playing its fifth game in nine days, while Skaneateles had rested through much of the early part of 2009.
In fact, the Lakers led 9-8 through one period, which was enough to get the Mustangs’ attention. All Skaneateles got the rest of the first half was a single field goal as Marcellus zoomed in front with a 14-2 run.
What’s more, the Mustangs did this without much from Melissa Lee, the team’s leading scorer, who had just four points all night. Instead, Emily Brisette stepped forward, with 12 points, while Megan Tock finished with nine points. Kate Gosson and Marie Temara each had five points. Jordan Dudden, with just five points, was the Lakers’ top performer.
Both Marcellus and Skaneateles play Hannibal late this week – the Mustangs on Thursday, the Lakers on Friday after meeting Westhill.
