When the Chittenango girls volleyball team resumed on Saturday following a long layoff, it made quite a comeback to beat Hannibal in five games.
Prior to that, the Bears had seen matches against Jamesville-DeWitt and Mexico postponed on back-to-back nights, and the extra rest might have helped for the energy level it showed at the end against Hannibal.
Chittenango lost the opener 25-20, only to pull out a close third game 26-24 before the Warriors rolled through the third game 25-13.
Barely avoiding a sweep, the Bears then fought through the fourth game 25-21 and wore out Hannibal in the fifth game, winning the match 25-12.
Through it all, Rachel Antelmi picked up 12 aces, to go with eight kills and four blocks. On the back line, Hailey Colarco had 12 assists, while Kelsey Pudney put up seven assists, four aces and three kills.
Mackenzie Jones had five kills and Brittney Tirabassi added four kills. Mashie Rose contributed three aces. In defeat, Hannibal’s Amanda Gage led her side with 10 assists, four aces and three kills. That win moved Chittenango to 3-5 on the season.
For its 2009 season openers, the Chittenango boys volleyball team got to be at home, but could not find success.
The Bears ran into a tough foe in Living Word Academy, taking a 25-11, 25-17, 25-20 defeat to the Lions.
In defeat, Jordan Barber earned five kills, while Greg Lang gained three kills and two assists. Luke Grinner also had two assists. For Living Word, Eathan Irish gained 30 assists, with Dave Masser (14 kills) and Deng Guy (nine kills) working on the front line.
It proved much closer Friday night, but the Bears lost in five to Canastota.
Chittenango won the first game 25-21 and lost the second game 25-18. In the crucial third game, the Raiders fended off several Bears game points and won, 29-27.
Thus, while Chittenango won the fourth game 25-19, it dropped the fifth game by that exact same margin. Grinner had 12 assists, plus seven kills, while Lang gained eight kills. Barber and Zack Boswell each got six kills, with Pat McGuinness adding four kills and three blocks.
