If the Hamilton ice hockey team wanted to enter the post-season discussion, at least one win over a fellow contender would be required.
Hosting Whitesboro last Tuesday night at Starr Rink, Hamilton thought it could stay right with, if not beat, the 4-8-1 Warriors — only to get a rude surprise in the shape of a 6-2 defeat.
All seemed to be well in the early going. Both sides scrambled for position, and the Emerald Knights poked in a goal to take a 1-0 advantage.
Then came the second period, which turned into a Hamilton disaster. Whitesboro attacked hard and beat Brandon Rush five different times for goals, a flurry where David Abdou (two goals, one assist) and Mike Towne (one goal, two assists) led the way.
From this huge blow, the Emerald Knights could not recover. Adam Jackowski did score once and assisted on Tyler White’s tally, with Blaine Holcomb assisting on both scoring plays.
This leads Hamilton into Friday’s meeting with state no. 1 Cazenovia at the Morrisville State College IcePlex.
