With first place on the line in the CNY Counties League National division, the West Genesee girls tennis team could not get on the board in last Tuesday’s match against Baldwinsville, taking a 6-0 loss to the Bees.
Jamy Bliss and Allie Kotula had the closest shot at a point, in third doubles, leading early and going deep into a third set before falling to Kelly Falconer and Kelli McArdell 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Meanwhile, Anisha Shetty and Sarah Brown fell to Rachel Taylor and Addie Schmidt 6-4, 6-2, with Brittany Laxton and Sierra Rotella losing to Nicole Leader and Amari Pollard by those exact same scores. Kelcey Myers, Molly Byrne and Jen Thomas all lost straight-set singles decisions.
A day earlier, WG had moved to 11-2 on the season last Monday with a 5-2 victory over Utica Proctor.
The Raiders forfeited two of those matches, but Myers and Brown did play, rallying to beat Kaitie Brown and Alyssa Haddad 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Laxton and Rotella swept past Casandra Hall and Amanda King 6-0, 6-0.
Byrne took a 6-2, 6-0 singles defeat to Francine White. Michenzi Marzano had a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 defeat to Rose Zaloom, but Thomas dominated her match, giving WG another point when she defeated Lisa Sikora 6-0, 6-0.
WG would recover from the B’ville defeat on Wednesday by toppling Henninger 5-2, again relying on doubles play.
Between them, the teams of Lowery-Myers, Kotula-Catherine Hunter, Maranda Dowling-Sarah Burgess and Christine Flask-Nicole Belko played eight sets of doubles and never lost more than two games in any of those sets.
Thomas, in singles, routed Kayla Grant 6-1, 6-2, while Byrne lost in straight sets and Shetty, after an early advantage, fell to Maurisha Knighton 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Keeping busy, the Wildcats met Cicero-North Syracuse on Thursday and put together a 5-2 victory over the Northstars.
Again, WG leaned on doubles, going 4-0 there. Shetty and Laxton beat Jordyn Kazel and Alex Buraczynski 6-2, 6-4, with Hunter and Kotula topping Lindsay Priest and Alissa Mirizio 6-1, 6-2. Dowling and Bliss got past Kelsey Wilson and Vennepha Luangaphay 7-5, 6-3.
To win, the Wildcats needed a pair of three-set efforts. Myers and Brown rallied past Stephanie Fahrbach and Alma Puskar 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. Rotella, in second singles, held off Meghan Storie 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
