Perhaps following a 52-point rout of West Genesee was impossible for the Cicero-North Syracuse girls basketball team to pull off – but it sure did try.
On Friday night, the Northstars took its act to Fayetteville-Manlius, wanting to do the same kind of damage to a 9-2 Hornets team whose only two losses both came to Oswego.
And while the result was not as one-sided, the Northstars’ 58-34 victory over F-M proved impressive enough.
On the defensive side, CNS did a superb job keeping the Hornets’ 1,000-point senior forward, Torie Lee, from getting any kind of traction. Lee had just six points, while teammate Morgan Axenfeld got a single field goal.
Meanwhile, the Northstars pounded inside as Stewart earned 19 points, Hickin got 10 points and Paul earned nine points, helping overcome the fact that Egan got just four points. CNS held F-M to just 11 first-half points, but didn’t get away until it outscored F-M 18-7 down the stretch.
This now sets the stage for CNS to take on Oswego Friday night, a game that could determine who gets the eventual top seed for the Section III Class AA playoffs. The Buccaneers enter the week at 14-1.
