Not only does the Cazenovia boys track and field team remain undefeated and dominant against OHSL Liberty National division foes, its neighbors from Chittenango are generating some noise, too.
As the Lakers were busy roaring past Institute of Technology Central 123-18 Wednesday afternoon, the Bears were handing Westhill its first defeat of the season in a 73-68 thriller.
Again, Cazenovia’s depth was on full display against ITC, starting with Jared Smith, who ran the mile in five minutes, 10.5 seconds, shared top honors with Noah DeRochie in the 3,200-meter run (both going 11:14.9) and was second in the 800-meter run to Andrew Kent, who won in 2:10.8.
Moving to the sprints, Sam DeLeon, in 23.9 seconds, edged Jack McNerney (24.1) in the 200-meter dash as Jack Aronson handled the 400-meter dash in 53.7 seconds, with Cormac Race (56.0 seconds) the runner-up. DeLeon was second in the 100-meter dash and Connor Wilson second in the 400 hurdles in 1:06.2.
Sweeping the field events, the Lakers had Angelo Annotto throw the discus 119 feet 1 inch ahead of Kyler Hathaway (106’1 ¾”) as Annotto also won the shot put, heaving it 41’ ½”.
Ray Satchwell had a first-place long jump of 20’11 ½” ahead of Hathaway (18’7”), also going 41’8 ¾” in the triple jump to beat out Josh Maxwell (37’5”), while DeLeon cleared 11 feet in the pole vault. Dalton Sevier, who topped 10’6” in the pole vault, won the high jump with 5’10” as Austin Sanders topped 5’8”.
While all this was going on, Chittenango was amassing enough points to topple Westhill and Devin Myers was at the forefront of the Bears’ efforts.
Myers was victorious in the 110 hurdles in 15.7 seconds, and then went 1:02.3 to beat Parker Tedford (1:05.5) in the 400 hurdles before unleashing a top triple jump of 40’10 ¼”. Myers also was second in the long jump with 18’10 ½”.
Jeremy Warters , second in the 110 hurdles in 17.0 seconds, tied Westhill’s Will Remillard by clearing 7’6” in the pole vault, and topped 5’10” in the high jump, while Jacobi Dwyer, in 54.2 seconds, went 1-2 with Caleb Prenoveau (54.6) in the 400 sprint.
Prenoveau got his own victory in the 800 in 2:06.3. Ersilio Cerminaro, second in the mile (4:44.5) and 3,200 (10:35.9), paired with Prenoveau, Nate Lampman and Dave Gratien to win the 4×800 in 8:47.02.
Chittenango’s girls team also had plenty of its own highlights, even though it lost, 90-51, to Westhill as the Bears swept all of the distance races.
McKenzie Dombroski was first in the 800-meter run (2:31.5) and 1,500-meter run 5:14.9), with Chelsea Lamphere taking the 3,000-meter run in 11:38.2. This came after Dombroski, Lamphere, Piper Beckwith and Emily Moon won the 4×800 relay in 10:51.8.
Maryanna Garcia also won twice, going 1:01.1 to edge Westhill’s Ashley Bolesh (1:01.4) in the 400 sprint while taking first place in the 200 in 27.6 seconds. Mia Morgillo tied Westhill’s Madison Scheirer by clearing 4’6” in the high jump and was a close second (1:16.3) to Lauren Bendall (1:16.1) in the 400 hurdles.
On Friday, Chittenango’s boys team was victorious in the distance medley relay at the New Hartford Invitational. Cerminaro, Lampman, Price and Dylan Reaume went 11:12.10 to beat the field by more than 11 seconds.
Prenoveau helped Lampman, Price and Cerminaro get third place in the 4×800 in 8:24.22, with the Bears also fifth in the 4×200. Myers, in 1:01.33, beat out Warters (1:02.78) for third place in the 400 hurdles, and Myers also was fourth in the 110 hurdles in 16.24 seconds.
For the Chittenango girls at the East Syracuse Minoa Invitational, Morgillo was sixth in the pentathlon with 1,828 points. The Bears were fifth in the 4×400 in 4:30.92 as Dombroski got fourth place in the 800 in 2:23.77.
