The Jamesville-DeWitt softball team was coming off losses to Cortland and Baldwinsville when it met Oswego last Monday afternoon, but regrouped enough to beat the Buccaneers 9-3 at the start of what it hoped was its its busiest week of the season.
A pair of first-inning runs quickly erased Oswego’s 1-0 edge, but the game didn’t break open until the bottom of the fifth, when the Red Rams batted around and scored five times, adding two more runs in the sixth.
Makenzie Keeler smashed a home run and earned three RBIs. Sarina Alexander’s pair of triples helped drive in three runs as Amanda Sumida doubled and got two RBIs. Carly O’Hern picked up the other RBI as Shayna Myshrall pitched a complete game, overcoming seven hits and five walks to prevail.
With Tuesday’s game between J-D and Christian Brothers Academy rained out, the Red Rams had to wait until Wednesday to resume – but when it did, it earned its highest run total of the season, trouncing the Homer Trojans 25-5.
The Rams scored in every inning except the fifth, capped by notching nine runs in the bottom of the third and six more runs in the fourth. In particular, Myshrall flourished, going six-for-six with a home run, two doubles and a career-best six RBIs.
Paige Sherling added four hits and drove in three runs, while Sara Gow, Hannah Gunther and Makenzie Keeler each had two RBIs and three runs scored. Sumida added three hits, joining Mary Dorazio and Katie Tzivanis earning one RBI apiece.
A busy weekend started with J-D taking on Cortland Friday and avenging an April 2-0 defeat to the Purple Tigers, prevailing 5-4 when, after giving up a 3-1 lead when the Purple Tigers scored three times in the bottom of the sixth, the Rams regrouped and got the two runs it needed in the top of the seventh to go back in front.
Sumida made that slim lead stick by getting the last three outs, and struck out 11 in a complete-game effort. Gow and Gunther both had two hits, with Myshrall, Alexander and Taylor Rodarmel earning one RBI apiece.
On Saturday, the Red Rams visited Phoenix and did exactly what it did against Homer, unloading on the Firebirds at the plate in a 24-0 romp that included runs in all seven innings, peaking with an eight-run outburst in the top of the fourth and six runs an inning later.
Alexander was six-for-six at the plate, including a double and triple, scoring three runs. Keeler managed five hits, two of them doubles, as she produced a team-best four RBIs. In all, the Rams had 23 hits as Myshrall, who pitched a complete game and held Phoenix to three hits, got four hits to also top the Firebirds and joined Gunther, O’Hern (who hit a home run), Sumida, Alexander, Mary Dorazio and Julia Fairbanks, each of them getting a pair of RBIs.
J-D would have a rematch with Oswego Monday and host Fulton Wednesday before Saturday’s game with Fayetteville-Manlius that is part of the “Rivalry Cup” series between J-D and F-M that will also include baseball, girls lacrosse and boys lacrosse games by day’s end.
