While the Jamesville-DeWitt girls swim team had a case as Section III’s top squad after its season-opening win over West Genesee, local bragging rights remained important.
So it was that the Red Rams and Christian Brothers Academy got together last Thursday night at J-D Middle School, where the Red Rams again asserted itself, eventually getting the best of the Brothers and prevailing by a score of 97-86.
At the heart of this victory was the Rams’ sweep of the relays. It started with the 200 medley, where Sophia Farchione, Meg Parker, Katie Salvo and Marissa Potamianos finished in one minute, 59.65 seconds to edge CBA’s quartet of Annie Fletcher, Julia Torell, Tessa Queri and Katelyn Wendt, who posted 2:00.52.
Then, in the 200 freestyle relay, Parker, Salvo, Alden Coyne and Samantha Coombs went 1:46.33, well clear of the Brothers’ 1:52.52. To close it out, Coyne and Salvo joined Alexis Phillips and Amelia Hesler to see J-D post 3:52.88 in the closing 400 freestyle relay.
Individually, Coyne was J-D’s top performer, going 25.58 seconds in the 50 freestyle ahead of Coombs (27.00 seconds) in a 1-2 Rams finish before swimming the 100 butterfly in 1:01.62, with Torell (1:03.58) settling for second place.
CBA countered with Fletcher’s double, earned by beating Hesler in a 500 freestyle classic, the pair separated by less than a second as Fletcher won in 5:31.56 to Hesler’s 5:32.07. To put that in perspective, Fletcher’s win over Farchione in the 100 backstroke, 1:02.71 to 1:04.16, was larger.
J-D had another 1-2 effort in the 200 freestyle, where Phillips won in 2:05.90 and Wagner was second in 2:09.36, while Emma Galletta swam the 100 freestyle in 58.12 seconds, beating out Coombs (59.39 seconds) for that top spot as Jordan Archer, in 1:20.87, held off Riley Cappelletti (1:21.12) in the 100 breaststroke.
Torell emerged as the top swimmer in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.18, again with Hesler (2:24.45) in second place. CBA’s lone sweep came in diving, where Sam Lanzafame won with 235.55 points and Erin Wind (209 points) got second place.
As this went on, Fayetteville-Manlius, who knocked off Liverpool on Sept. 18, had a successful follow-up at Auburn, using a series of second-place finishes to pile up points and eventually get a 95-73 victory over the Maroons.
Sophie Fowler led the Hornets with a pair of individual titles, going 2:29.87 in the 200 IM before winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.67. Abbey Harris claimed the 100 freestyle in 59.43 seconds, while Christina Burnam went 1:11.53 to beat the field in the 100 backstroke. To start the meet, Fowler, Burnam, Emma Reed and Cara Campbell won the 200 medley relay in a time of 2:11.09.
