So now we know that the Baldwinsville girls tennis team can handle heat – at least in a literal sense.
Temperatures hovered around 95 degrees, and it was much warmer on the court, during last Tuesday’s visit to Auburn, but the Bees coolly handled the situation and earned a 6-1 victory over the Maroons.
Kahlei Reisinger hadn’t lost a game this season until the first set of her match with Katherine Brundage, but that was just a single game, and the end result was a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
While that went on, B’ville claimed the other two singles matches, seeing Jennifer Stone fight past Celia Mattie 6-1, 6-4 and Amanda Coogan work for a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Lindsay Jarman.
Only in first doubles did the Bees suffer a blemish, Natalie Kot and Bridgett Brown running into Julia Wagner and Lauryn Husby and taking a 6-2, 6-4 defeat.
But B’ville earned the other points in straight sets. Taylor Slink and Lauren Dusse got past Anna Streeter and Jaime Whitford 6-1, 6-2, with Gabby Fiello and Marissa Tommarello topping Emma Solomon and Maggie Lesch 6-4, 6-3. Katherine Cassidy and Alina Minkova paired up to shut out Brianna Gronau and Kylie Blanchard 6-0, 6-0.
Back home on Thursday to face Liverpool, the Bees welcomed the cooler temperatures and improved to 4-1 on the season, rolling past the Warriors in a 7-0 shutout.
Strong doubles play proved a featured attraction. Kot and Brown rolled past Alexandra Ioannidis and Katelyn Nguyen 6-2, 6-1, while Slink and Dusse handled Chloe Foster and Anna Baggett 6-0, 6-1.
Continuing in that trend, Fiello and Tommarello blanked Eleni Ioannidis and Julie Nguyen 6-0, 6-0, while Cassidy and Minkova turned back Megan Blake and Valerie Morgans 6-0, 6-1.
Reisinger didn’t give up game this time in singles, rolling past Julie Schewe 6-0, 6-0. Stone beat Rachel Foster 6-2, 6-1, and while Coogan had a bit of trouble in the second set, she still handled Nicole Sedlock 6-0, 7-5.
The big match this week pits B’ville in a rematch with the West Genesee side it topped 6-1 on Aug. 26, in between matches against Syracuse East and Syracuse West.
