What was scheduled as a large-scale George Constantino Memorial Invitational Wednesday night at SRC Arena turned into a more intimate affair when dozens of boys indoor track and field teams had to cancel their appearance due to the extreme weather.
But the show went on, and Cicero-North Syracuse would score 107 points, beating out Liverpool’s third-place total of 84 points, but finishing behind Fayetteville-Manlius, who won with 137 points.
The Northstars won the 4×400 relay as Edward Mahana, Zach Kennedy, Collin Ryan and Matt Williams posted a time of 3:44.01, holding off F-M (3:46.62) for that title.
But the Warriors countered by winning the other two relays. Connor Buck, Dylan McCarthy, Nick LeClair and Ryan Comstock went 8:42.25 in the 4×800 to beat out F-M (8:48.13) and C-NS, who was third in 9:00.04.
Then Brandon Mayfield, Collin Gwilt, Jamie Gadaleta and Donald Frost posted 1:40.30 in the 4×200, edging out C-NS’s quartet of Ryan Massena, Daquan Mathis, Matt Romanyk and Cory Mitchell, who finished second in 1:40.97.
Individually, The Northstars’ George Reader won the high jump, clearing 5 feet 8 inches as Kennedy (5’2”) took fourth plac.e Reader also got to second place in the triple jump with a top attempt of 37’8”, with Jason Hughes (34’8 ½”) fifth.
C-NS also prevailed in the pole vault, where Mark Hentges cleared 12 feet 6 inches, easily ahead of teammate Mitchell Brown and the Warriors’ David Lewis, who each cleared 11 feet.
Mahana was second in the 55-meter hurdles in 8.51 seconds, with Liverpool’s Jeremy Rivera (9.22 seconds) ahead of C-NS’s Jason Hughes in fourth place.
Buck, in 4:28.98, finished second to F-M’s Peter Ryan (4:25.91) in the mile, while C-NS saw Andrew Bearkland get third place in 4:36.66, with the Warriors’ Ty Brownlow (4:41.66) fifth. Brownlow also was fifth in the 1,000-meter run.
LeClair went 1:27.66 in the 600-meter run, putting him in second place as the Northstars’ Allen Garnes (1:29.43) finished fourth. Peter Gonzalez, in 38.98 seconds, was fourth in the 300-meter dash, ahead of two C-NS runners, Mathis (fifth) and Jared George (sixth).
McCarthy (9:57.79) and Comstock (10:37.33) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 3,200-meter run, with C-NS getting Joe Tircarico in fifth place and Sam Barber in sixth place. Mayfield took third place in the 55-meter dash in 6.86 seconds, with teammate Rashan Crenshaw sixth, behind C-NS’s Matt Kilian (7.06 seconds) in fifth place.
C-NS had Ross Mathewson finish second (43’11 ¾”) and Tyler Mosher third (42’9 ½”) in the shot put, Crenshaw went 18’1” in the long jump to finish third, ahead of Mayfield (18’ ¼”) in fourth and C-NS’s Nick Payrot in fifth.
Just 24 hours earlier, Liverpool and C-NS both had athletes going to Colgate University’s Sanford Field House for the Section III Field Event and Distance Carnival.
Warriors runners dominated in the boys 3,200-meter run, where Ben Petrella won in a time of 9:28.43 and no one else got close to cracking the 10-minute mark, though Ty Brownlow finished fourth in 10:10.53 and Ryan Comstock (10:22.29) was sixth.
Mathewson rose to second place in the boys weight throw, his top throw of 45’7 ½” topped only by Rome Free Academy’s Ryan Swavely, who won with 47’1”. Mitchell Brown was third in the pole vault with 10 feet as Clinton’s Liam Pierce won with 11’6”.
Reader was seventh in the triple jump with a top effort of 37’7”, ahead of Crenshaw (36’5 ½”) in ninth place. Joe Antonello cleared 5’4” to tie for sixth in the high jump, with the Warriors’ Nate Guarente (5’2”) getting to ninth place.
Jillian Stagnitta gave the Liverpool girls a fourth-place finish in the lone running event, the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 10:56.17 as Juliana Basla (11:26.86) and Abby McNamara (11:38.10) were ninth and 10th, respectively.
Jasmine Hall was fourth in the weight throw, heaving it 28’2”, with teammate JeNiece Gallishaw (26’2 ½”) in sixth place. Kelley Townley topped 6’6” in the pole vault and finished fifth. Alexis Bittel took eighth place in the triple jump, going 31’1”, while Hajal Petel was ninth (4’6”) and Amy Zurawski 11th (4’4”) in the high jump.
