BALDWINSVILLE – Things continued to hum along for the Baldwinsville girls basketball team with two more victories in the week following its first-place finish in the Bill Middleton Tip-Off Tournament.
Hot early shooting and a fair amount of scoring depth and balance were the keys for the Bees as it turned back Bishop Ludden 61-51 last Tuesday at Baker High School.
Even though its possessed plenty of experience on its roster, the Gaelic Knights still couldn’t counter the 3-point shooting of Natatlie Hollingshead and Olivia Davis, who combined to sink seven from beyond the arc.
Hollingshead finished with 18 points and Davis got 16 points, closely followed by 10 points from Maddy Poky and nine points from Beverly Marinelli.
All of this helped the Bees build a 32-23 margin by halftime, which it maintained throughout the second half despite a big scoring push by Ludden’s Abby Reynolds, who had 22 points and 10 rebounds, though no other Gaelic Knights player hit double figures.
Going for four in a row against visiting New Hartford Friday night, B’ville got it by jumping out quickly in each half to get away from the Spartans and prevail by a score of 54-30.
Defense was the main theme here, with the Bees limiting New Hartford to four points in the first quarter. Then B’ville dominated the third quarter 18-5 to thwart any possible Spartans comeback.
By themselves, the duo of Hollingshead and Polky outscored New Hartford, Hollingshead gaining 21 points and Polky adding 15 points as they both converted on four 3-pointers. Beverly Marinelli added six points.
And this leads to the first big game of the season for the Bees as it hosts Cicero-North Syracuse Tuesday night in the Northstars’ season opener before it welcomes Christian Brothers Academy on Friday night.
