With a dramatic final flourish, the West Genesee wrestling team pushed itself into the CNY Counties League National division title race.
Wins in the last two matches in last Wednesday’s meet against Cicero-North Syracuse helped the Wildcats rally to beat the Northstars 31-26 and stay tied with Baldwinsville for first place with a 4-0 league mark. WG will face the Bees on Feb. 10.
All night long, the Wildcats and Northstars traded surges. WG started at 135 pounds with Mike Young edging past Jordan Ramos 4-2 and Erik Krohl (140 pounds) earning a 3-1 decision over James Segars.
When Heitham Wady (145 pounds) lost 6-1 to Todd Hagger, CNS began a string of winning four of the next six matches. In between, Josh Cruz (160 pounds) and Nick Marco (171 pounds) both won, Cruz pinning Alex Bruinsma 29 seconds into the second period.
At 103 pounds, Ian Coolican rolled past Dan Ciciarelli 15-2 before Connor Grome (112 pounds) blanked Tony Battista 6-0. Despite this, CNS led, 26-22, with two matches to go.
Erasing this deficit, Jason Fitch (125 pounds) pinned Rob Brandt in 1:37, but Jon Fetterolf still needed to win the 130-pound finale. Fetterolf did so, getting just enough points to fend off CNS’s Matt Dunham 6-4.
WG is back home next Wednesday to face Cicero-North Syracuse.
